upgrading third party transactional interactions

The Challenge

Dodge & Cox Funds, a San Francisco-based investment company, needed to enhance the transactional architecture and look & feel of their retail account management environment. New features were being added, and a more usable interaction design was required. Simplexity had previously upgraded the public Dodge & Cox web site and associated applications.

The account management environment is provided by a custodian based in the Midwest, but there is significant flexibility in the way the transactions are architected and displayed. The mark-up coding of the environment is, to a great extent, proprietary.

The Solution

Simplexity worked closely with both the custodian and the client to test and implement a usable and elegant interaction design. All stakeholders were motivated by creating a solution requiring minimal support; the solution would need to be as self-service as possible. The look & feel of the public site was used to make the transactional environment a seamless click away.

Lessons Learned

Coordinating work among multiple vendors is always a challenge. There needs to be a 'general contractor' who is accountable for the day-to-day tasks and issues management. The separation between presentation and function is sometimes not as clear as it should be with these systems. Following a logical, version-tracked process is critical. Iteration of ideas can be time-consuming.
