building a database-driven web survey application
The Challenge
A management consulting
firm needed to track large amounts of client data to measure the success
of their clients' strategic restructuring plans. Over 200 on-line questions had
to be completed by many people within these organizations. Reviewers
in different physical locations needed to share information, track previous
answers, and make edits to the results.
The Solution
Simplexity built a series of living forms with an administrative interface on top of a custom data collection and retrieval system. This custom web database application was built to be convenient for the participants and easily administered by the client.
The questionnaire was made usable by breaking it into logical, digestible sections. These
sections were made web accessible and editable. Each participant was free
to fill out the survey at their convenience. If a participant chose
to fill out only part of the survey in one sitting,
their answers were saved. Upon returning to the survey, the application
remembered the completed answers. The participant could then
edit previous answers and enter new answers.
Because form results were stored in a database, custom reporting could be implemented to the clients specifications. Administration and reporting functions were accessed via a web interface built to meet the clients workflow.
Lessons Learned
The management consulting company sent an RFP for a different
solution than the one Simplexity ultimately devised. By carefully re-evaluating
the clients need, Simplexity was able to build a more fitting solution
than the one initially requested, saving the client both time and money.
Organizations frequently ask for assistance with a perceived solution
rather than with a known problem (or need). The range of vision for solutions
is usually limited by experience. Making business and audience
analysis the first step in any project brings clarity to the process, and
ultimately saves development dollars. Beginning a web development project
with a clear definition of the need allows consideration for a wider variety
of options. Clients are often surprised by the range of technical possibilities
available.
