webmaster outsourcing
The Challenge
The
webmaster at a growing firm left with critical knowledge during
an important project and on short notice. Faced with partially completed
applications and a list of work requests requiring immediate attention, the
firm was left with tough choices. They needed to find someone immediately
who possessed a considerable breadth of web related expertise—web, programming,
database, design. However, they also needed to take their time to find a good
match for permanent employment.
The Solution
Simplexity provided immediate assistance from our production office. Time
and materials support was provided to the firm for the few months it took to
hire a replacement webmaster. Search and purchasing applications were fixed,
navigation problems were identified and new content was updated on a regular
basis. Applications were reprogrammed so that less skilled administrators could
manage them once re-implemented.
Lessons Learned
Leaving your web site unmanaged for any period of time is unwise. You never
know who is forming an opinion about your firm based on the accuracy and usability
of your web site. People who are disappointed may never come back.
It takes both broad and specific skills to manage complex web sites, and you
should evaluate carefully the difference between hiring entry level designers
and a highly skilled multi-disciplinary team. If you only have the budget
for entry-level staff, make sure your administrative and content management
interfaces are architected for their skill levels.
